Drama Queens Educational Workshops

Written by Danny Benbow

Drama Queens deliver and run a series of workshops in schools specially designed to suit the educational needs of children in foundation and key stages one to four.

The company meet up with the teacher to draw up a lesson plan based around the needs of the children in the following subjects; English, French, History, Literacy, PHSe, Science.

Drama Queens use creative art to relate chosen topics and themes to drama and role playing, raising the children’s learning capabilities.

Drama Queens play games to put children at ease.

The workshops begin with a series of games to help put the pupils at ease, then they will follow the lesson plan incorporating drama, dance, vocals and poetry, these sessions help the youngsters learn through new and creative ways. Drama Queens visit the school on a weekly, block or term basis, evaluating the children’s progression on the way and working through the material until a successful ending is reached.

Drama Queens workshops build childrens learning potential.

Emma Seel who runs the Drama Queens workshops told A4DD, "The main focus of Drama Queens is on raising self esteem and building the learning potential of students who struggle at learning. Being dyslexic myself, I have found methods to overcome my barriers of study so that has driven me to work harder, be more determined in achieving and succeeding in my career and educational goals. Naturally I had to pass this knowledge on to others to help them achieve, especially those who find learning a challenge and a steep mountain to climb."

Learning difficulties and literacy aid.

The lessons aid those with learning difficulties and help to improve literacy as well as develop communication skills which will help the children in later life. "I have began to create workshops on interview techniques for when the children eventually have to get a job, here I focus on communication skills and body language which help them adapt for getting a job all by taking the seam, playing games, doing activities and getting the children to answer their own questions but with the help and stimulus from me," she said.

"I have recently done some work at a primary school which was nice and very enjoyable from which I received good feedback,” said Emma who has also applied for tutor work at ACLE summer camps in Italy which will hopefully broaden her ability and give her a new insight into teaching techniques to benefit the children.

Other courses on offer are;
·    how to use a dictionary
·    how to study
·    children's communication
·    the way to happiness activities
·    human rights and drug awareness

Emma is also involved with Birmingham based NK Kreations whose Tunes Times Tables workshops have helped children who have difficulty learning maths and times tables.

As well as her involvement with learning, Emma also has an interest in music and singing. She is the manager, co-producer, lyrist and performer of The Emmatree which is a melange of African rhythms and world fusion music which blends rhythm and melodic vocals from around the globe. Current plans for Emmatree include a five track EP of a professional standard that is ready to be marketed and promoted. The lyrics portrayed in the music represent spiritual messages that encourage people to look deeper into their lives and question it.

Emma will also be travelling out to Africa to study African tribal dance to enable her to teach it back in the UK and will also be doing voluntary work. "Out in Africa I will be helping with the educational side of things and aim to give children the wisdom and knowledge to develop skills and be more able so that they can carry on and achieve what they need to," she said.
