London Bridge Festival

 A Grand Old Birthday Party

London Bridge is one of the oldest standing landmarks in the Capital and with it's birthday coming up, 800 candles is just too many to fit on a cake, so what better way to celebrate such an important benchmark than throwing a 15 day party extravaganza?

What's On

During the day London Bridge is usually swamped with laptop swinging grey suits but from July 10th the area will be a 'stage' for art and performance. London Bridge Fesitval is a two week long performance fest with a massive diversity of music, theatre and many other performances including comedian Alexis Dubus, whose refreshing style has audiences struggling for breath. Another of the talented performers is Joanna Scott, an artist from St Albans, who will be running workshops in lantern making.

Throughout the fortnight there's an array of competitions including photography and the 48 hour Short Film Competition where cast, crew and writers have two days to shoot and edit their film on a given subject. The Awards are aptly named The Boris Awards which include prizes for Best Drama, Best New Comedy and others. The Festival is hoping to become an annual event in the lives of Londoners and visitors alike. It may also become an integral part to the build up to the 2012 Olympics.

The Cause

As well as commemorating 'Old' London Bridge's birthday, the organisers are also raising money for The Lord Mayor's Appeal, 'Saving Lives', which is helping St John Ambulance and The Lord's Taverners charities to buy more equipment and help youth cricket and special needs groups.

How You Can Help

London Bridge Festival is looking for performers and artists and are encouraging anyone with 'talent' to come along and entertain the thousands of people expected to turn up, whether it be juggling on the bridge or singing on the streets, there's a place for everyone.

There is also a Festival Club held every Tuesday fortnight in the weeks leading up to the Festival where artists and performers can meet each other and well.. just have fun. Anyone wanting to get involved in the event is welcome. It's free and there's comedy on, too. It's at the Heeltap pub near London Bridge and starts at 6.30 pm.

Come along to perform or watch in the area of London where Shakespeare, Chaucer and Dickens were inspired to write their art.
